Day Christensen Ashtanga Intensive Week in Ireland

In October- The 21st-25 Oct 2019 Day Christensen Will come to visits the Ashtangi Yogis of Ireland in Blackrock, Co. Louth for a week of practice and training. Day will offer 9 Sessions in Total. 5 Mysore and 4 Workshops.

Day Christensen began her yoga practice in 2004 after receiving her BFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. During her college years as a fine artist, a lifelong interest in yogic philosophy began to surface. She incorporated the study of yoga with her academic pursuits. Though the reading of sacred and historical texts proved to be interesting, it was lacking one major aspect: experience. With many signs pointing her in the direction of yoga, she took up the practice and began to gain the experience she was missing from study alone.

Asana required a different type of strength and mobility that she had not bargained for as a former athlete. Despite the frustration and challenges she often met on the beginning path of yoga, she continued and found a renewed sense of vitality and clarity.

It was in 2005 that Day met Kino MacGregor in Chicago, and the experience connected her to the profound beauty and intelligence of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system. Today Day is an enthusiastic student of Ashtanga Yoga, practicing in lineage of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, having completed the Intermediate series and learning the Third series under Kino’s guidance.

Day’s teachings are born from her own disciplined and dedicated practice. She encourages students to challenge themselves physically, while, at the same time, be easy mentally. She is thrilled to share what she has learned with a new group of students in Ireland.

Week 1-
14th Oct 12-2.30pm –
Lets get inside Inversions-
Dreaming of the ability to lift gracefully into a handstand? Or do you want to strengthen your already existing inversion practice? Come learn the best exercises to strengthen your upside-down time and gain comfort and control in headstands, forearm stands and handstands. In this 2.5hrs workshop, Orla will lead you through an inversion specific warm up, teach you the foundations of inversions strength work, and guide you through the best technique for head/forearm/handstands. With this knowledge, you can safely continue to work towards your favorite upside-down poses!

Week 2

Lets get Hippy
Often the things you least want to do are the things you most need to do, so if half-pigeon is not your idea of fun then those hips of yours may need opening!

If your week mostly consists of sitting at a desk then this is THE workshop for you.

Your body is an amazing machine which is designed to be active and moving. It generally doesn’t cope well with the amount of sitting we do.

Sitting results in consistent compression of the hip flexors – the muscles that join your abdomen to your legs. Over time this results in a shortening of the hip flexors which adjusts the position or tilt of the pelvis. This in turn upsets the muscles and structures both above and below the hips. Hence why knee problems and lower back pain are often connected to tension in the hips.

Running and cycling can also result in tight hips due to the repeated use of the hip flexors to lift the leg to propel you forward.

The body also holds emotions in tense muscles and the deep muscles of the hips are often the centre of many stuck and suppressed emotions. By releasing the muscular tension, old stuck emotions can also be freed.
Hip Opener Workshop Content

Over this 2.5hr-hour workshop you will delve into hip opening poses, learn what the benefits of doing them are, and how to perform them safely.

You will gain a greater understanding of the anatomy of your hips and will use standing, seated and supine postures to increase your range of motion in all directions. We will work on stabilising the hips and lower spine and conditioning and releasing the muscles around these joints, resulting in a new freedom of movement.

The Hip Opener workshop will include a yoga practice to prepare the body for the deeper hip opening poses.

You will learn healthy alignment in your body in a fun and playful way, and will leave having released your hips and feeling empowered to continue the opening in your regular practice.

The ideal workshop for runners, cylists and desk jockeys

Suitable for all levels from beginners to more advanced yoga students.

You will work at your individual level with an opportunity to modify poses whenever necessary, building up your personal yoga practice in a playful and safe manner.

Bend Backwards for Yoga-
Backbends have an amazing uplifting affect on us mentally, physically and emotionally and are powerful energy enhancers which promote instant vitality and wellbeing.
New levels of energetic freedom and openness are available when a fuller range of motion in the spine is accessed, and the chest area (heart) is opened…..Not just wheel

So whether you are yearning to drop back into wheel or simply want to find a pain-free Up-Dog, this workshops presents the opportunity to get really playful with your practice and try things you ‘believe’ you can’t do, or don’t know how to do.

You will learn the principles of how to ‘build’ your backbends, and
how to protect vulnerable body parts by stabilizing your lower body and using bandhas, props and proper alignment.

You will work through a progression of poses, and these will be demonstrated using different bodies, shapes and sizes so you can see how to adapt poses to suit you. There will also be lots of opportunity to ask questions and get specific feedback.

You will receive alignment adjustments & assistance and have the opportunity to work past your fears, challenge your beliefs and try out poses in a safe, playful and fun manner.
Recommended for
Yoga students of all levels who want to physically or energetically open their heart area, find pain-free backbends or try back bending poses in a more interactive setting where personal attention can be given.

This is NOT a beginner series, nor an all-levels weekend. Be prepared to work hard and smart. If you come with a partner, be ready to work with others. If you come solo, you will be expected to work with multiple people. There are pre-requisites for a reason– as long as you have basic mastery of the fundamental skills asked, join us!

You will not be expected to accomplish everything presented. In the event you do, you will be expected to challenge yourself to do it with multiple partners.

We will refine mastery of our primary roles (Base or Flyer) through the lens of outside perspective (Flyer, Base, Spotter).

One of the main problem areas for a lot of us who delve into the depths of yoga are the hips. They are the key to more freedom and fluidity in all poses. Sometimes however due to our impatience or other underlying issues ,we push and pull , twist and force trying our utmost, against our better judgment so as we can pop a lotus! But instead we very often pop a knee injury which can take months if not years to rectify. In this workshop Bill will focus on getting deep into the hip joint exploring safe and effective ways by which to finally free up the most stubborn of movers and release the flowering lotus budding therein. It is not a quick fix workshop , you won’t leave with your lotus fragrantly flying out the studio door , but you will be equipped with the tools by which to safely float into whatever asana with ease and openness. This will be a dynamic fun filled vinyasa flow workshop suitable for all levels. You will work to your own level of fitness and all asanas will have a friendly alternative. You are all most welcome , just bring a towel some water and a smile.

HANDSTAND WORKSHOP- 28TH DEC with Orla Mc Adam

This workshop will begin with a fairly intense warm up, including a lot of conditioning and flexibility drills specific to handstands. You will be given explanations of what to do with your body to get a perfectly straight handstand. Numerous exercises will be practiced to help you understand the shape of the posture, both on the floor and on your hands. You’ll also be working with a partner so you can learn how to spot and correct someone else’s technique.

In prepartion for the new studio opneing in Blackrock I’ve decided to stop alot of my main public classes and focus on my own training for a few weeks, spend time with my teachers, aslo planing and hosting exciting workshops.
