Our children live in a hurry-up world of busy parents, school pressures, video games and competitive sports. We usually don’t think of these influences as stressful but often they are. The bustling pace of our children’s lives can have significant negative effects.

Yoga can help counter these pressures. When children learn techniques for relaxation and self-regulation they can more readily connect to their inner lives, navigating life’s challenges with more ease. Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body positivity with a physical activity that’s both challenging and creative. Fostering cooperation and compassion is a great gift to give our children in an often competitive culture.

Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically it enhances strength & coordination, beneficial posture and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calm increases. Children in yoga exercise, play, connect, and develop a close relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. Yoga brings a child’s marvellous inner light to the surface.

When yogis in India developed the asanas many thousands of years ago, they lived close to nature and took inspiration from it—the hood of a cobra, the curve of the archer’s bow, the grounded stature of a tree. When children imitate the shapes and sounds of nature they have a chance to experience the perspective of another being. The physical movements introduce kids to yoga’s true meaning: union, expression, and honour for oneself and others. They grow their understanding of their own special place in the delicate web of life.Krista Leonard is a certified Pilates mat work and Hatha yoga instructor with specialized training in Kids’ yoga and Trauma Sensitive yoga.
