Kids Yoga

\
Starting with Lisa Connolly on the 13th March 2020

These classes will be taught by Lisa Connolly ERYT500, she has been teaching various styles of yoga in Dundalk and Stockholm for the last 5 years. By far her favourite type of yoga class to facilitate is Kids yoga. Lisa was Kids Yoga certified in February 2015 after Rainbow Kids Yoga teacher training.

Yoga is a fun way for children to develop a variety of important skills in a nurturing, non-competitive environment.  From a young age children begin to experience pressure to perform academically and socially. Add to this the pressure of competitive organised sports and it’s is easy for children to become overly self-critical, and lose confidence in themselves. During this time yoga can be a great remedy for the tension associated with daily stressors as well as an important facilitator of healthy physical, emotional and cognitive development.

As a Rainbow Kids Yoga instructor Lisa strives to maintain a balance between spontaneity and structure, so that children participating in the classes learn to listen to themselves and each other while being able to express themselves creatively. The incorporation of stories, songs, games and poses creates a multi-sensory environment, which children develop through visual, tactile and aural learning.

Children are encouraged to respect and pay attention to their bodies, make sure each pose feels good, and to come in and out of poses when they are ready. There is no other form of exercise that offers such a wide range of movements.  While practicing children’s Yoga, we bend forward and back, we twist and side bend, strengthen and stretch, balance and even spend some time upside-down.

Besides the obvious benefits of yoga in helping us be stronger and more flexible, Yoga for children also helps in developing coordination, balance, and many other important motor skills. Furthermore, children’s Yoga classes offer fast and active play whilst warming up or playing with yoga poses as well as quiet more focused time while holding certain poses or practicing relaxation exercises.

Our children live in a hurry-up world of busy parents, school pressures, video games and competitive sports. We usually don’t think of these influences as stressful but often they are. The bustling pace of our children’s lives can have significant negative effects.

Yoga can help counter these pressures. When children learn techniques for relaxation and self-regulation they can more readily connect to their inner lives, navigating life’s challenges with more ease. Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body positivity with a physical activity that’s both challenging and creative. Fostering cooperation and compassion is a great gift to give our children in an often competitive culture.

Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically it enhances strength & coordination, beneficial posture and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calm increases. Children in yoga exercise, play, connect, and develop a close relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. Yoga brings a child’s marvellous inner light to the surface.
